Jan Bender specializes in two very different types of photographic images. She creates her landscape photographs with a 4x5 view camera. Although she has worked in color, she prefers black-and-white for its classic qualities. She prints all of her own work as an essential part of the creative process. Her landscapes have been exhibited in many solo and group shows, including many corporate exhibits.
Photograms, her other specialty, do not involve camera or film. Photograms are created by placing plant cuttings and other materials directly on light sensitive photographic paper. The color photograms have many layers of design and color. The sepia-toned plant photograms are created with plants that she grows. Each photogram is one-of-one, never to be duplicated.
