Born in Washington, D.C. in 1974, Lauren Henkin grew up in a Maryland suburb, then moved to Missouri where she attended Washington University in St. Louis and earned a Bachelor of Arts in architecture. The curriculum included classes in painting, sculpture, furniture design, photography, and graphic design. After earning her degree, she moved home to Maryland and began working as an architect. During the next 10 years, she worked as the public programs manager for the Corcoran Gallery of Art, book designer for Dumbarton Oaks, and creative director for WTS International, a leisure management firm.
Although much of her photographic knowledge is self taught, Henkin has furthered her fine arts education by taking workshops with photographers Michael Eastman, Chan Chao, Gordon Hutchings, and George Tice.
She states “I am drawn to a couple of qualities in a subject. The first is quietness—whether it’s a building façade, a window with peeling paint, or a private spot in a public park. The second is the documentation of what I perceive to be endangered, whether it’s a warehouse or a way of life. Third, I am very also interested in the American vernacular: landscapes and buildings that are purely ‘American’.”
